Humpbacks: Freckles and baby and perhaps Quartz

Kelp horns and whups!

Desperate times require desperate measures. By evening no orcas had come near the area and the kelp horns came out to siren the orcas in. Quite pretty sounds and a lot of cheerful laughter.

The Naiad Explorer, both yesterday and today, went way off to the west and did not see any orcas. Today they found ten humpbacks as a consolation. Humpbacks were in Blackney Pass and attention naturally shifted to them. Freckles and her baby were the highlight of the day especially as the baby breached several times while Mama hurried by a bit further away. They even made a few sounds as they foraged and played.

Change is in the air. A group of seagulls, perhaps taking rest after near humpback encounters, landed for a long time on the rocks just to the side of the Lab. Herons and kingfishers, being ever more present, speak to the passage of the season as well. Phalaropes are beginning to flock and swirl offshore. The days are definitely getting shorter but unlike other parts of the Province the temperatures have remained temperate and pleasant.

This day is almost done. Tomorrow is another day – let’s see what it brings!
