Today, Corky’s campaign bus FREEDOM, with David Howitt once again at the wheel, will roll onto the ferry in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island in Washington State to begin Corky’s Freedom 2001 tour. Our plan this year is to show Corky’s fabulous banner and tell her story to people in the Pacific Northwest, with the main focus on British Columbia, where Corky comes from & her family still lives. As we begin, our efforts join those of the campaign to bring Lolita home!

To bring you up to date on Corky herself, she’s much the same as ever, still swimming in circles around her tank at Sea World. Recently, she has been joined by Bjossa who was formerly held at the Vancouver Aquarium. Corky & Bjossa have apparently been getting along well, possibly because they have a common bond in Corky’s cousin Hyak, who was Bjossa’s companion for many years. Bjossa, though she is an Icelandic orca, has long known & used the “A5” dialect of Corky’s family. If this familiarity was the basis for the ease with which the two orcas became acquainted, it augers well for Corky’s successful return to her family. Our hopes for Corky live on!
Join us in Seattle or Victoria if you can, & if you can’t be there, think FREE CORKY!… and by all means send us new patches to add to Corky’s banner!!!
Our best wishes to you all,
Paul & Helena
